About North Olympic History Center

We connect the future to the past, through the present.

Since 1948 The North Olympic History Center has served as the region’s steward of memory. Founded by community members who recognized the need to preserve the stories, records, and artifacts of the North Olympic Peninsula, the Society began as a volunteer‑driven effort to safeguard the area’s heritage and make it accessible to future generations.

Over the decades, NOHC has built a substantial archival collection documenting the Peninsula’s cultural and environmental history. Photographs, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, and personal histories trace the region’s evolution—from Indigenous homelands and early settlement to logging, maritime industries, and the development of modern communities. These materials have long supported researchers, educators, and residents seeking to understand the forces that shaped Clallam County.

Today, the North Olympic History Center continues this work through preservation, digitization, exhibits, and public programs. The Center maintains a growing archive, supports community research, and collaborates with schools, libraries, and local organizations to share the region’s history widely and accessibly. Its hands‑on programs and digital resources help connect past and present, ensuring that the stories of the Peninsula remain part of community life.

As the region changes, NOHC remains committed to preserving historical materials and expanding public access to them. A more detailed history of the organization, including key milestones and developments across its 75‑plus years, is available in the accompanying PDF.

Board and Committees

Our Board of Directors meets on the second Monday of each month at noon in the Board conference room in our Administration and Curatorial building. Our meetings are open to all NOHC members.

We also encourage members who would like to get involved to consider joining one of our committees: Membership and Outreach Committee, Finance Committee, and Collections Committee. Committees typically meet once a month, or as needed.

Transplanted California archeologist who sat on the San Jose Historic Landmarks commission for nine years, making good use of my anthropology major and history minor. I’m cataloging the Native American collection (among other things) at NOHC. I encourage others to join me in financial support of the History Center for the long-term retention of the collections.

Eve Datisman, Secretary
Retired teacher‑librarian with a background in English and the humanities, shaped by the landscapes where she’s lived—from Yellowstone, the Tetons, and the upper Snake and Salmon Rivers to northern Idaho, homelands of the Bannock, Shoshone, Tukudika, Gros Ventre, and Nez Perce peoples. Now on the North Olympic Peninsula, she researches and catalogs the stories held in NOHC’s artifacts, photographs, and archives. Come explore—your history may be waiting.

John McNutt, Treasurer
I grew up listening to family stories. Whether the story was serious or humorous, they were always more than facts and dates. There was the rest of the story. Through the North Olympic History Center I want to help others dig deeper into their family’s story.
There is a real human story within every family story.

Bruce Murray, Past-President
My love of history began early, fed by National Geographic, American Heritage, and a well‑worn encyclopedia set. I spent decades in Paradise, California, volunteering at the Gold Nugget Museum and serving on its board, while travel with the U.S. Navy and later as a civilian broadened my sense of the world’s stories. After losing my home and community museum in the 2018 Camp Fire, I moved to Port Angeles and found a new home at NOHC, where I help create exhibits, publish the Strait News, and serve on the board. .

Bill Brigden, Board Member
My interest in “all things History” began as a child with family stories of the first Brigden family arriving in North America in 1634. Most of our ancestors and modern families lived in the northeastern coastal states creating many childhood opportunities to visit most of the historical sites in New England. In the days before TV, but with weekly visits to the county library, historical novels became my go-to entertainment. My college degree was earned in Hanover, New Hampshire with a major in American Colonial History. It continues to be my pleasure to support and participate in the work of the NOHC here in my adopted retirement community.

Ellie DiPietro, Director Ellie began her museum career 17 years ago at the KU Natural History Museum and has been learning ever since. She’s passionate about creating engaging museum experiences, researching history’s mysteries, and caring for artifacts that tell our community’s stories. She loves NOHC because the local history of the Olympic Peninsula is fascinating and unique.

Paul Gleeson, Director My interest Olympic Peninsula heritage starts in the 1960’s when I was on the first season Ozette Archeological project. I was on the project through its closure in 1980. I returned to the peninsula in the 1990’s when I became the Cultural Resource manager for Olympic National Park. After my retirement in 2011, I volunteered at the Makah Culture and Research Center and served as Chair of the Clallam County Heritage Advisory board. As a member the NOHC board since 2014. I have been interested managing the collection in ways to support a very public community education program.

Paula Hunt, Director Paula Hunt’s great-grandfather, T.S. Harrington, arrived in Clallam County in 1891 and three years later established a homestead on Mount Pleasant that remains in the family. She has served on the board of the North Olympic History Center since 2023.

Larry Lang, Director Larry Lang grew up in Maryland where, at an early age, he developed a love for history. He has lived in Clallam County since 1980 where our local history has become his passion. Lang has been a board member of NOHC since 2013. He loves scanning and analyzing old photos, and researching in old newspapers.

Becky Shurmann, Director
After having spent over 40 years working in both art and history museums, as a preparator, mount maker, carpenter, exhibits designer and collections manager, I am very pleased to continue in this field as a volunteer. This work has and still does deeply satisfy my love of research, stories, problem solving and caring for collections.
